Okay, for those of you who have been checking up on my blog lately have probably seen that this has been the post from you know where. I think I've updated it about five times. Somehow, my computer knows just how to delete everything I've written. Needless to say, it's been a blast.
So onto the story of my dear friend Alec.
Alec was able to get baptized on August Seventh. What a wonderful experience :] For those of you who don't know the story, please allow me to share (as I repeatedly press the save button).
Alec and I met at Stu Co convention ealier this year. I know, what kind of geeks go to Student Council Convention? Let me tell you this, I am proud to say I do!
When we got home, we started to date. He called mormonism voo-doo worshiping (in his joking yet semi-serious way). I was in charge of an upcoming mutual activity called Standards Night. For this activity, I was supposed to plan a fireside teaching and expressing the wonderful standards that our church holds. Naturally, I grabbed his phone, put an event on his calendar named "Voo-doo Worshiping with Lindsay" for the date and time of standards night.
Surprisingly, he was ready and willing to come along. Now..the pressure's on!
I started to get nervous thinking of who I should ask to speak. Now it wasn't just a bunch of youth sitting around, it was a bunch of youth, with a potential convert in the crowd! I prayed and prayed. I finally got my answer. Remi and Cole Stoneman and Justin King! Perfect. They would speak about Temples, Gratitude, and the Word of Wisdom. Lovely. It was going to be a good night.
The night came around. I was rushing for everything to be perfection. Speakers? Check. Special Musical Number? Check. Prayers? Check. Bishop? Check. Programs? Oh no...
Normally this wouldn't be a big deal. But for some reason I flipped out. I knew I needed those programs for something.
The night before, I had typed out a very detailed program. It had excerpts from the For The Strength of Youth pamphlet. So big deal if we didn't have them? Heavenly Father was there to prove me wrong. So, I rushed, got the programs printed and folded, just in time to pass them out and get started.
All during the program, Alec was reading that program. He would hide it from me and my friend Taylor. If we would look at him while he was reading it, he would tuck it under his leg like we couldn't see it. Haha....
And then Remi spoke about Gratitude. It was an amazing talk. One line that she said was something like, "I know I am standing here tonight saying exactly what someone needs to hear. I don't know who that person is, but I know Heavenly Father is helping me tell them what they need to know." Well, that went right passed me.
A few days later, we broke up.
And a few days after that, I got a phone call. From Alec.
He reminded me of what Remi said in her talk, and insisted she was talking about him. Come to find out, Alec had been secretly reading the Book of Mormon on plane rides to see his dad in texas, at home, at school, wherever he had the chance. He told me he couldn't put it down. I think his exact words were, "Crap. I think this stuff is true."
He's been going to church nonstop since then. He's been taking the missionary discussions as fast as they could give them. He's been showing people he's changed, trying to make a difference in the world, and trying to prepare for a mission so he could bring even more souls unto Christ. What a great guy, right?
Remi and Cole were my institute teachers for Mission Prep. On the last day, I shared my story about Alec. Cole chimed in sharing a pretty amazing second half of the story. Cole said he and Remi had been praying for an experience to help someone find the Gospel. As a couple days went by, Remi felt like she needed to be an inspirational speaker (which she would be fan-freakin-tastic at!). Then they got the phone call from a man asking them to come be their inspirational speaker. Supposedly they had heard about Remi and Cole and how awesome they were at it. Funny thing is, they had never done it before! Hmmm...
They agreed to speak. I'm sure they did a wonderful job. Yet Remi still didn't feel like that was it. Then they got my phone call. And because they spoke, they were able to help Alec come to the Gospel. In fact, Remi sang at Alec's baptism because he felt she had helped him that much. Awesome.
It hasn't been an easy road for Alec. I'm so proud of him. He's awesome!
By the Way... Luke Frampton was able to baptize him. Luke reported to the MTC last week. He will be serving in the Baton Rouge Louisianna Mission. He'll be great!
